Removing a tree from dense planting

In a garden planted right up to the fence line, there is not much clear ground to work with. The contractor brings the crown back in stages and lowers the trunk in short sections, keeping each piece on your side of the wall wherever possible. Where that is not possible, the neighbour is asked for access so the work can be done from the other side.

Dense planting also hides the base of the tree. Shrubs and undergrowth around the trunk are cleared first, so the contractor can see the root flare and the base before deciding how to bring the tree down.

Storm damage in a wooded garden

A dense canopy catches wind, and a heavy, wet limb can come down across a paved area, a carport or the boundary wall. If a branch is resting on a structure or a line, keep clear of it and do not cut it yourself; a limb under tension behaves unpredictably.

Where a tree has already lost limbs in a storm, have the rest of it looked at. The same wind load that broke one branch often leaves others weaker than they look.

What changes the quote

  • How much clear ground there is beside the tree for pieces to land.
  • Whether the wood has to be lowered over a boundary or into a narrow strip.
  • Clearing undergrowth around the base before the work can start.
  • The volume of timber and branches and how they leave the property.
  • Whether the stump is ground out so the bed can be replanted.

Frequently asked questions

My tree is over the neighbour's roof. How is that handled?

It is lowered in sections, usually on your side. The contractor may ask to work from the neighbour's garden for part of the job.

Can you work in a garden that is overgrown?

Yes. Underlying growth around the base is cleared first so the tree is properly assessed before cutting starts.

Do you grind the stump so I can replant the bed?

Yes, if grinding is quoted. Ask for the stump to be ground below ground level for replanting.
