Working in a tight, planted garden

A mature tree in a Faerie Glen garden rarely stands alone. There is usually paving, a wall, a pool or a bed of established plants within a few metres of it, and every one of them has to be kept out of the way. The contractor plans the drop zone first, then brings the tree down in pieces small enough to land in the clear space that is left.

That is slower than felling in open ground, and it is why the size of the gap matters more than the height of the tree when a contractor works out the approach.

Clearing up in tight ground

Once the tree is down, the branches have to come out through the same tight space. Chipping on site, or cutting the wood small enough to carry, is often the only practical route when there is no room for a trailer beside the tree. Ask how the waste will be handled, because on a tight stand it changes the amount of work considerably.

The stump then stays in the ground unless grinding is quoted. In the shallow or rocky soil common below the koppies, ask about the stump at the same time so the ground can be left ready to replant.

What changes the quote

  • How much clear space there is around the tree for pieces to land.
  • The size of the tree and how many sections the trunk has to be cut into.
  • How the branches and timber are removed from a tight garden.
  • Whether the ground under the tree is rock, shallow soil or ordinary garden soil.
  • Whether the stump is left low or ground out for replanting.

Frequently asked questions

Can the tree be removed without damaging the garden?

A careful contractor lowers the wood rather than dropping it, but some wear on beds and lawn is normal. Say what must be protected.

How is the waste taken out of a tight garden?

Usually by chipping on site or cutting the wood small enough to carry. Ask about it when you get the quote.

Should I have the stump ground at the same time?

If you plan to replant or repave, yes. It is easier to arrange both in one visit.
