Tree felling in Montana
In Montana, established garden trees now stand beside newer buildings and paving, which is where most of the tree trouble in the suburb begins. This page covers what felling here involves and how to get it quoted.
Fast-growing trees that have run out of room
Gardens in Montana often carry quick-growing species planted for shade, and a tree that grew fast has usually grown large. Once a building, a carport or a paved parking area is put up nearby, the tree that was once in open ground is suddenly overhanging a structure and lifting hard surfaces with its roots.
Removing it stops the problem getting worse, but it is rarely the end of the job. The stump and the surface roots normally still have to be dealt with before the ground can be repaired or replanted, so ask about grinding at the same time as the felling.
Roots, paving and structures
Where roots have lifted paving or cracked a low wall, the removal has to be planned around that damage rather than on top of it. Cutting the tree leaves the roots in the ground, and a grinder can only reach so far, so a contractor will look at what the roots have done and say what is realistic.
Protect what is still sound. Tell the contractor which surfaces and structures must not be touched, so the drop zone and the rigging are set up to avoid them.
What changes the quote
- The size of the tree and how close it stands to a building or paving.
- Whether roots have already lifted or cracked hard surfaces.
- How much of the trunk has to be lowered rather than dropped.
- Access through gates and driveways for equipment and a trailer.
- Whether the stump is ground out and how the ground will be reused.
Getting a quote in Montana
Send your suburb, a photo of the tree and a note on what it is affecting, whether that is a roof, a wall, a driveway or paving. Say whether the property is a home or a complex. We pass the enquiry to an independent contractor who covers the area.
Prices and quotes
We do not publish prices. The contractor quotes you directly after seeing the property in Montana. The general factors are on the Tree felling page, and our guide to what drives the cost of tree removal in Pretoria explains how to compare quotes.
Frequently asked questions
The tree has lifted my paving. Can it still be removed?
Yes, and removing it stops the damage spreading. The stump and roots are usually dealt with separately so the ground can be repaired.
Can a complex arrange the felling?
Where the tree is on common property, the body corporate or managing agent arranges it. Inside your own garden it is normally yours.
Do I need to clear the stump before relaying paving?
Usually, yes, at least to the depth of the new surface. Ask for grinding and say what the ground will be used for.
